With my wife having completed the fourth week of her diet, and having lost a stone in weight through the process, I think it’s about time that I review the meal replacement shake that she has been using.  Throughout the 4 weeks, due to my inconsistency in preparing the essential oils, the only ‘diet product’ that she has regularly been taking has been the TrimShake from doTERRA.

TrimShake Basics

At the time of writing, the TrimShake comes in powder form only, and in two flavours – Chocolate or Vanilla. I’m not aware of any existing plans for doTERRA to expand the range, although I wouldn’t at all be surprised if they did.

The powder is contained in a medium-sized tub with a net weight of 660 Grams. Each tub contains approx 20 servings, with each serving intended to be 33g (each tub contains the measured scoop).

The TrimShake can only be ordered through a doTERRA consultant (of which I am one), and usually retail at the recommended price of £43.20 – although I personally sell at £40.

Woah.. expensive!

I agree.. it is. However, the TrimShake’s expense is justified (see below).

In the UK, one of the most popular brand of meal replacement shakes are produced by a company called SlimFast. A quick look around and you will see that a 438 Gram tub of SlimFast will cost about £6.. which, without even the use of a calculator, I can see is an awful lot cheaper.

With the vast contrast in price, I feel it is important to take a consideration of the ingredients, and so I have outlined these below:

(comparison between Slim-Fast Simply Vanilla and doTERRA’s TrimShake Vanilla)

SlimFastPer 36.5g Serving TrimShakePer 33g Serving
Protein 5.11g 16g
Carbs 22.63g 7g
(of which sugars) 18.25g 0.3g
Fat 2.19g 3.5g
(of which saturates) 0.365g 0g
Fibre 4.015g 5g
Sodium 0.10g /

Vitamins (% given based on RDA)

Vitamin A 45% 43%
Vitamin C 40% 37%
Vitamin E 83% 33%
Vitamin D 84% 58%
Vitamin B6 50% 38%
Vitamin B12 50% 48%
Thiamin 59% 38%
Riboflavin 54% 58%
Niacin 42% 33%
Folic Acid 45% n/a
Folate n/a 38%
Biotin 54% 33%
Pantothenic Acid 48% 43%

Minerals (% given based on RDA)

Calcium 64% 58%
Phosphorus 59% 43%
Iron 37% 34%
Magnesium 20% 38%
Zinc 57% 38%
Iodine 43% 33%
Potassium 33% /
Copper 35% 40%
Selenium 29% /
Manganose 15% /

There’s a lot of stats here, but a couple of points stand out:

1. SlimFast appears to contain more minerals and vitamins per serving than TrimShake. This may indeed be the case, but I’m not smart enough to give a definitive yes to that point. The reason being that the figures for vitamins and minerals are only given as a % of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) – rather than precise amounts.

As the serving size for the SlimFast is 3.5g larger than the TrimShake, it seems logical to me that if we were to compare like for like, and add more of the TrimShake powder to the serving size (say 3.5g!), the % RDA for the TrimShake would increase. As the amounts are given as a % it is unclear how great the difference really is, and how much a difference 3.5g would make.

2. Protein – The ‘Simply Vanilla’ SlimFast includes only 5.11g protein per serving which appears to be recorded in the ingredients as “milk protein”.  The doTERRA TrimShake on the other hand includes 16g of protein per serving, which is made up of whey isolate, pea protein concentrate and rice protein concentrate. Anyone into bodybuilding will be able to tell you that there is a difference with the type of protein. These latter protein’s mentioned are of a far greater quality than milk protein.

3. Carbohydrates – SlimFast includes 22.63g (of which 18.25g are sugars) per serving where as the TrimShake includes 7g (of which 0.3g are sugars) per serving. In this contest, the lower the carbohydrates the better. The doTERRA shake contains almost 18g less sugar! – per serving. That’s pretty huge!

I think the stats alone indicate that with the TrimShake, you are getting a healthier option. I don’t want this blog entry to turn into a criticism of SlimFast as that’s not the intent here, but I would say that you get what you pay for.

The SlimFast ingredients are recorded as follows:

Skimmed Milk Powder, Sugar, Maltodextrin, Vegetable Oil, Inulin, Thickeners (Gum Arabic, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum), Lactose, Bulking Agent (Cellulose), Milk Protein, Stabilisers (Sodium Carboxy Methyl Cellulose, Dipotassium Phosphate), Emulsifer (Soya Lecithin), Modified Maize Starch, Flavourings, Antioxidants (Tocopherol- rich Extract, Sodium Ascorbate), Colour (Beta-Carotene).

Sugar is the second ingredient on the list! Compare that with the TrimShake:

Protein Blend (Whey Protein Isolate, Pea Protein Concentrate, Rice Protein Concentrate), Fiber Blend (Fibersol-2, Guar Gum), Sunflower, Natural Flavours, Essentra Trim, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Root and Leaf Extract, Stevia.

Again, I think it’s pretty clear that TrimShake is a high quality product – there is a stark contrast in the ingredients used.

What does TrimShake do?

You may have noted some unusual ingredients included in the TrimShake, and whilst unusual, they are very valuable! See, where as the SlimFast actually offers no weight loss ingredients (it is essentially a ‘filler’ designed to keep an individual stocked up with enough minerals, vitamins and ingredients to keep them going and feel full to help reduce food intake) the TrimShake actively works to help the body lose weight.

The official product guide tells us:

TrimShake includes 250 mg of a powerful weight-loss ingredient Essentra®Trim per serving, a patented extract of ashwagandha leaves and roots that has been clinically demonstrated to support weight loss. Originally studied as an adaptogen for energy production, Essentra®Trim was shown to help control the release of the stress hormone cortisol which is associated with the accumulation of fat, particularly around the stomach, hips, and thighs. Essentra®Trim has also been demonstrated to help control stress-induced appetite, overeating, and carbohydrate cravings. It also helps support blood sugar levels already in the normal range and enhances energy levels while helping to alleviate fatigue commonly associated with dieting and exercise.

So, what this is saying is that TrimShake is not merely a ‘filler’, but instead actually includes a high quality ingredient that boosts the body’s ability to lose weight.

Final Comments

Overall, with TrimShake, you are receiving high quality protein, fiber, and enough minerals and vitamins to supplement your regular diet, along with a high quality weight loss ingredient.

It is clear that these ingredients are going to be more costly than those provided in the SlimFast. ‘High quality’ unfortunately requires a high price.. and whether or not you feel the price to be ‘worth it’ is a personal decision.

My personal view is that weight loss can be achieved through many ways and methods – SlimFast has its success, and there is no disputing that. However, if you want to lose weight with a product that will feed you high quality ingredients (plenty of good stuff; none of the bad) then you may want to consider trying doTERRA’s TrimShake. It too is highly successful.

I can honestly say that my wife has lost 14 lbs (1 stone) in just 4 weeks.. and we can attribute this to be due in large to the TrimShake, which she has taken each morning.  I can also tell you that she recommends the Vanilla ahead of the Chocolate!

The TrimShake is designed to be taken in unison with doTERRA’s “Slim and Sassy” essential oil blend which also boosts weight loss. For further information and success stories, please take a look here – http://www.iamslimandsassy.com/
