I had to leave our church service 30 mins early again on Sunday and head down to the south of the island for the final game of the Manx Hockey “Business League”.  This ‘fun’ league had primarily been created by the Manx Hockey Association as a way of introducing the sport to amateurs like me.

By setting up a separate ‘business league’ they knew there’d be a good chance that the teams would be fairly amateurish! That said, as the league progressed, our competitors were adding more and more regular league players to their team.

Within our team (mixed), we had 5/6 league players.  The others were much like myself – just eager to play and full of naive excitement and energy!  Actually that’s not completely true.. energy is something I lack!!  In any case, our team was fairly even in terms of ‘league players/non-league players’, as a team is made up of 11 (5 male / 5 female + 1 of either).

Following our 4 alloted games.. we were very proud to finish in 2nd place:

With the above table, I’ll highlight for your attention our impressive goal difference! Scoring eleven goals and conceding just two!! I should also point out that we didn’t get a chance to play MSR who finished top after their 4 games.

With the last game, the league transformed to a rather odd ‘finals’ scenario, and despite our league position of 2nd place, we ended up in a final fighting for “bronze” with the team that were in 5th place – who we had already beaten 3-0.

For this final game, our opponent Lloyds adjusted their team and drafted in a couple of extra league players  – so much so that most of their team albeit 1 or 2 (?) were now regular ‘league players’.  Yes, the amateur ‘fun’ of the competition had been replaced by competitive desire to win!

Consequently we found it to be a much harder game, and despite attacking for much of the time (at one point we had 5 penalty corners in a row!! – one after the other), and having a goal disallowed… we finished the game with a draw: 1-1

The 3 ‘Finals’ games finished as follows:

2011 Final MHA BL MSR 1 4 MHA BL Zurich 12:30 KWC

2011 Final MHA BL Boston 1 1 MHA BL Lloyds 14:00 KWC

2011 Final MHA BL Hospital 1 2 MHA BL PWC 15:35 KWC

With the other results – particularly MSR losing the gold/silver final –  it meant that we were the only team to finish the whole competition undefeated!  3 wins and 2 draws!

A very enjoyable competition! I was surprised that hockey could be so much fun! Perhaps one day I’ll get myself down to a league team training session and give the whole ‘league’ concept a try.

It ends there.. we didn’t win.. (!) but our ‘Boston Hockey Team’ were invincible! – and we are certainly happy enough with that!!
