I have briefly touched on this topic in this blog when I discussed the level of trust that we can have in dōTERRA, and the independent testing that is carried out for each batch of pure essential oils. I feel the topic is important enough to warrant a further blog posting.

Who is Dr Pappas?

Dr Robert Pappas is a leading expert in essential oils, who is widely recognised and highly respected for his knowledge, integrity and accountability.

He obtained a Ph.D in Physical Chemistry from the University of Tennessee, and became the Senior Chemist at The Lebermuth Company, where he analysed essential oils, and helped the company develop 2000 fragrances.

In 1997, he then taught a class at Indiana University South Bend on the subject “Chemistry of Essential Oils”. This was the first time anyone had taught a class specifically about essential oils in the country.

In 1998 he started his own consultancy business, and he created the “Essential Oil University”. Dr Pappas continues to lecture the subject to students today.

Sylla Sheppard-Hanger, founder and director of the Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy in Tampa, Florida calls Dr Pappas the “champion” of those who value high quality essential oils, and says:

He’s the go-to person for chemical analysis, and he’s always open to answering any questions about essential oils, whether you are actually on the industry side or a student.  If I find something new, he can tell me what’s in it right away

The Lebermuth Company President, Rob Brown recalled:

Dr Pappas is an expert in understanding, qualifying and managing the chemistry of plants that produce essential oils and other aromatic extractions

Who is dōTERRA?

dōTERRA is an essential oils company that was established in the Spring of 2008. Since that time, it has quickly grown to become the leading essential oils company in the world, with thousands of “Independent Product Consultants” (representatives) across the world.

dōTERRA essential oils have built up an impressive reputation for their purity and high quality.

How are Dr Pappas and dōTERRA connected?

Firstly, it is important to make clear that Dr Pappas is not “connected” to dōTERRA in any commercial capacity. He is not employed by the company, and he is not paid to advertise or promote the company. He is truly independent.

In his capacity as an independent expert and analyst of essential oils, he is contracted to test dōTERRA’s essential oils as a 3rd party.

However, and whilst emphasising his independence, I do wish to emphasise his association with dōTERRA. I feel this is noteworthy, important, and a factor that dōTERRA can be hugely proud of.

Here is a video of Dr Pappas (from his own YouTube Channel) explaining the testing of essential oils. For your information, the other individual featured in the video is Dr David Hill, dōTERRA’s Chief Medical Advisor.

Here is a video of Dr Pappas (again from his own YouTube Channel) talking about the quality of Haiwaiian Sandalwood Oil. For your information, David Sterling (dōTERRA President) and Emily Wright both feature in the video, and were with Dr Pappas as his visited the distillery.

Finally, here is a video of Dr Pappas giving training at a dōTERRA “Convention”:

Why do I believe Dr Pappas’ involvement with dōTERRA is significant?

Firstly, Dr Pappas’ plays a crucial role in independently testing the oils to ensure that dōTERRA essential oils are as pure as humanly possible; free from artificial ingredients, fillers, and pesticides. The fact that dōTERRA have gone to the leading expert, shows very clearly that they only want the highest standard for their essential oils.

Secondly, Dr Pappas’ willingness to appear in videos and photos with dōTERRA’s Founders and Directors, and attend dōTERRA Conventions and Training Meetings makes it very clear that Dr Pappas is comfortable with dōTERRA.

Although careful to emphasise his true independence from dōTERRA, and correctly be seen to be such, I believe he is happy for his name to be associated with the company.

That is hugely significant!
